DIY Exterior House Painting

April 23rd, 2013

It’s that time of that year when all painting companies are hard at work doing all the exterior painting they can fit in three to four months. If you want to save money and do it yourself, here are some tips.

Rivas Painting suggests to first pressure wash your house. This will not only get rid off all the dirt and dust but if you have a siding, it will remove any paint that is flaking off, saving you time from scraping it off. Pressure washing should be done at least 24hrs before painting.

There are various ways of painting the exterior of a home, one of them is brushing and rolling. If you have a full time job and you will probably be doing it in 4 weekends, so say goodbye to your summer because you will likely need all that time to finish your house. Most painting companies will use a spray machine. It is easy to use and will get the job done quick. If you do not want to go spend a thousand dollars for one, you can rent one at Home Depot for about $60 a day. Before you start spraying everywhere, we suggest to cover all areas where you do not want to get paint on (i.e., mail boxes, windows, door bell, fixtures, etc.). You can use poly or rolls of papers to cover all these areas.

Products that can be used depend on the surface that you will be painting. The most popular product that is used on concrete, stucco, wood siding, fascia boards and trims is exterior acrylic latex. It is durable and should do the job for years. All manufactures carry this type of paint. Most manufacturers can match colours and can customize colours for you. The quantity depends on the size of the house and the type of surfaces. For a solid finish, we recommend two coats.

We hope you enjoy your upcoming summer and happy painting to you all.
